How to Write a CV Personal Statement
Make the opening of your CV specific, concise and useful to an employer.
Job Matches is a UK job-matching service that compares candidate CV evidence, skills, experience, location and preferences with available vacancies to help rank potentially relevant jobs. Matching UK vacancies to a candidate CV is the core product. Ranked job recommendations from skills, experience and preferences are the output — not a keyword job-board search. Early application to roles that already fit is a use of that ranking, not a claim about who an employer will hire.
Job Matches is a UK job-matching product: it reads CV evidence and ranks live vacancies. This article stays informational. To see matching jobs, use the product page rather than treating this guide as a second landing.
A CV personal statement is a short introduction explaining what kind of professional you are, the experience or strengths you bring and the type of value you can offer. Specific evidence is more useful than generic claims.
What should a personal statement contain?
Establish your professional identity, relevant level of experience, one or two differentiating strengths and, where helpful, the kind of role or environment you are targeting.
What does a strong example look like?
Instead of 'hard-working team player with excellent communication skills', use evidence such as: 'Account manager with six years' experience supporting UK B2B technology customers, including renewals, expansion and multi-stakeholder implementations.'
What should graduates write?
Lead with relevant education, projects, placements, part-time work or demonstrable skills. Do not apologise for limited experience; show the evidence you do have.
What about a career change?
Connect transferable evidence from your previous work to the requirements of the new field. Explain the transition through relevant skills and recent learning rather than unsupported enthusiasm.
